A North East woman has been detained in Egypt following unconfirmed reports of an assault.
The woman, believed to be from Chester-le-Street, in County Durham, has been detained overseas, the Foreign Office has confirmed.
It is understood she was taken into custody accused of an offence in Sharm El-Sheikh.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), said: "We are supporting the family of a British woman who is detained in Egypt and are in contact with the local authorities".
The Northern Echo contacted Durham Police for comment but was referred to authorities overseas.
