Iowa citizen review boards in limbo
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The future of citizen review boards in the state of Iowa is in limbo as a bill banning the groups statewide awaits the Governor’s signature.
Board members talked somberly about what they’ve accomplished since forming in 2021. They said that it includes more transparency when it comes to crime and acting as a liaison between the community and the police department. Others said they needed to continue to work as normal until the bill is officially signed into law. The city attorney said she expected that to happen soon.
After that, they’re essentially waiting for their next steps. Board President Arthur Kim said they’re weighing their options on how to continue the work within the guidelines of the law but wanted to make sure the board continued to have meaning.
“The work is important and being in compliance with legislation and being able to do the work is important,” said Kim. “If there is a way to do it, we’ll figure out if there is a way. We want this work to continue to be meaningful.”
The Governor has 30 days to sign the bill into law. If she does, it will take effect on August 16th.
