NWSL Power Rankings Week 8: Kansas City Current Back at Top and a Brazilian Goal Fest

It looks like Kansas is getting its gunpowder back and we have a centre-back who won’t miss from the PK spot.

NWSL had everything this week, but mostly golazos. Here are the top four if you want to watch before you proceed to see how the teams did in week 8.

14 - Utah Royals (+/-0)

Although they held Angel City scoreless in the first half and the visitors didn’t give them much work to do in the first 45’, they couldn’t replicate it in the second half.

13 - Chicago Stars (+/-0)

With Masaki Hemmi as the interim coach, Chicago looked better this week and even outshot Washington. Nonetheless, goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury denied many of Chicago’s opportunities and they let the result slip away in the 83rd when Gift Monday found the back of the net.

12 - Bay FC (+/-0)

It looks like off-the-field matters have finally affected what is going on on the field. What will be needed to turn things around? It looks like coach Montoya doesn’t have the answer to it.

11 - North Carolina Courage (+/-0)

A miscalculation by Casey Murphy in a late corner gave Orlando the chance to draw the game. It was a shame because otherwise, the Courage would’ve gotten three wins in a row and against a top table team. However, things look brighter for the Courage now that they’re finally playing to the potential of their roster.

10 - Seattle Reign (-2)

Nothing much happened in this match but it was a shame that after getting a big win against a top team last week, they couldn’t get at least a point from a team in the low part of the table.

9 - Racing Louisville (+1)

Taylor Flint’s golazo not only granted Louisville three points but also was nominated for goal of the week. What is more, despite a bad start to the season, Louisville is finding some consistency and this week, they’re one point shy of the playoff spots.

8 - Houston Dash (+1)

Three shots total and two on target were enough to beat Seattle this week, through the goal scored by Maggie Graham. Well done, Houston, on maximizing and taking your chances.

7 - NJ/NY Gotham (-3)

If there was something nobody expected, it was Taylor Flint’s shot from distance that resulted in Gotham’s defeat this week. Esther still couldn’t break her goal drought in that match and despite being the better team, they had to go home with the defeat.

6 - Portland Thorns FC (+2)

The fact that Portland played with one more woman for 45 minutes and didn’t take much advantage of it makes you wonder if the coach actually knows what he’s doing. However, a late PK helped them to save a point on the road against a very good San Diego side and that’s commendable and more so when you think that was the third PK centre-back Jayden Perry scores this season.

5 - Angel City (+1)

Angel City did what it was supposed to do against one of the weakest teams in the league. They solved the match in the second half with a golazo scored by Christen Press and another by the always present Alyssa Thompson in stoppage time.

Nonetheless, the most important thing about this match was not the result but Savy King’s health. We wish her the best in her recovery process and we’re glad she’s doing well after Friday’s scare.

4 - San Diego Wave (+1)

They could have it all after scoring early in the game but a red card shown to Kennedy Wesley for a foul on Olivia Moultrie in the first half conditioned the outcome of the game. San Diego was outshot 21 to 5 but they weathered the storm and almost got away with the win. However, a late PK forced the Wave to divide the spoils.

3 - Washington Spirit (+2)

The Spirit has to thank Aubrey Kingsbury for their three points on the road. If it wasn’t for her great saves, maybe the score would’ve been pretty different.

2 - Orlando Pride (+/-0)

The Pride bumped into an opponent that is on the rise and despite the many opportunities, they could only find the back of the net in stoppage time. Barbra Banda still can’t find her mojo but her fellow countrywoman Prisca Chilufya did and helped Orlando to avoid a back-to-back loss.

1 - Kansas City Current (+/-0)

After two weeks under the water, Kansas resurfaced with a convincing win that saw Temwa Chawinga return to the scoresheet, a marvelous Debinha score a brace, and her fellow countrywoman Bia find the back of the net as well.
