Utah Gov. Spencer Cox signed an executive order to launch the Government Reform, Innovation and Transparency initiative, in a move that's being compared to the Trump Administration's Department of Government Efficiency.

Cox's GRIT initiative is aimed at enhancing government efficiency and service delivery across Utah, and will build on the state's reputation as one of the best-managed in the nation, the governor said in a statement on Friday.

It's a goal that will be achieved by fostering greater transparency, innovation, and employee-led problem solving, according to the governor's office.

"Utahns deserve a government that listens, adapts, and delivers," Cox said. "We’re not here to maintain the status quo — we’re here to make things better."

"GRIT is about building a culture where every employee is empowered to solve problems," he added in his statement, "and every taxpayer sees the results."

The GRIT initiative requires state agencies to submit at least one efficiency improvement project to the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget by July 1. Additionally, each division, office, or bureau must independently launch at least one internal project.

Agencies will also participate in the statewide Efficiency and Process Improvement Collaborative professional learning network, known by its acronym, EPIC, that actively uses public feedback gathered through the state's Customer Experience Initiative.

The executive order empowers cabinet members and state employees to identify and address inefficiencies, while providing Utahns with more opportunities to share feedback on their government interactions.

The public is encouraged to participate by submitting feedback online or through QR codes available on receipts and in government buildings statewide. The executive order takes effect immediately.
