If you travel between Laramie and Cheyenne, you should anticipate construction-related delays on Highway 30.
Beginning next week, a mile-long section of Highway 30, between Bosler and Laramie, will be closed to traffic while a local business constructs a railroad spur under the highway. At the same time, work crews will also be building a bridge to span the rail spur.
A one-mile-long unpaved detour will be built to bypass the construction area. The detour will have a speed limit of 35 miles per hour and a width restriction of 16 feet.
During construction, motorists are encouraged to obey all posted signs, flaggers, and other traffic control measures. Additionally, drivers are urged to avoid distractions like cell phones while traveling through the work zone.
Wyoming Department of Transportation District One Senior Public Relations Specialist Andrea Staley told Bigfoot99 that the rail spur and bridge are not WYDOT projects. Staley wrote that WYDOT is allowing the private company to work on the state-owned road and that the projects are privately funded.
In Carbon County, US 30 intersects with US 287, and the three routes are concurrent for 20 miles (32 km) as they pass by Sinclair. After Walcott, US 30 and US 287 split off from I-80 and follow the Union Pacific Railroad and Lincoln Highway route, providing an alternate route when I-80 is closed due to weather conditions.
U.S. Route 30 in Wyoming runs from Kemmerer in the west to Pine Bluffs on the eastern border, passing through Rock Springs, Laramie, and Cheyenne. It is part of the United States Numbered Highway System that extends from Astoria, Oregon, to Atlantic City, New Jersey. In Wyoming, US 30 mostly follows the historic Lincoln Highway and intersects with Interstate 80 numerous times
The route is 454.37 miles (731.24 km) long and runs mostly along the historic Lincoln Highway. It enters Lincoln County from Idaho and intersects with Wyoming Highway 89 (WYO 89) near Cokeville. US 30 then merges onto Interstate 80 near Granger and remains concurrent with I-80 for a significant portion of its route in Wyoming.
In Laramie, US 30 passes by the University of Wyoming and rejoins I-80 east of the city. The route continues through Albany County and enters Cheyenne, where it intersects with I-25 and US 87. In Pine Bluffs, US 30 ends its route in Wyoming and continues into Nebraska.
The rail spur and bridge construction project along Highway 30 in Albany County are expected to be completed by October 10th, of this year.
WYDOT advises that unforeseen circumstances, such as inclement weather, may delay construction at times.
