The Monmouth Ocean Central Labor Council, which represents nearly 100,000 blue collar union workers, has endorsed former Senate President Steve Sweeney for the Democratic nomination for governor.
“Steve Sweeney is a fighter for New Jersey workers, and that’s why the council is proud to support him,” said Wyatt Earp, the union president and the Ocean County Democratic chairman., “His leadership has made a real difference, and we know he will continue to fight for the working men and women of this state as Governor.”
Earp, a descendant of the famed lawman of the 19th century American west, is also the representative of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union. He serves as a vice president of the New Jersey AFL-CIO.
Sweeney is also a labor leader. He served as a business agent of the Ironworkers Local 299 and is now the first general vice president of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Iron Workers.
“Throughout his career, Steve has been a staunch advocate for labor, standing up for fair wages, benefits, and the rights of working people,” said Earp. “His record speaks for itself, and we believe he is the leader New Jersey needs to move forward and ensure a fairer, more equitable future for all.”
Ocean County Democrats declined to endorse a gubernatorial candidate at their convention last month. The Monmouth Democratic organization voted to endorse Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) for governor.
Earlier today, an estimated 1,500 showed up at a “Hands Off” protest against President Donald Trump and one of his top advisors, Elon Musk. This was one of about thirty protests across the state.
“I think it’s about most Democrats I’ve ever seen in one place in Ocean County,” said former Lakewood Mayor Marta Harrison, a longtime Ocean County Democratic leader.
