MSU’s Trey Augustine named one of five finalists for the AAU Sullivan award for the best amateur athlete in the country

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan State sophomore goaltender Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich.) has been selected as one of five finalists for the prestigious AAU Sullivan Award, given annually to the top amateur athlete in the United States. The AAU Sullivan Award has been given out since 1930 to the nation’s best athlete at the collegiate or Olympic level.

Augustine is the second MSU hockey player to be a finalist for this prestigious honor – Jeff Lerg was a Sullivan finalist in 2007. Augustine and Lerg, along with Stewart Iglehart (1937), and USA hockey standout Angela Ruggiero (2006), are just the third and fourth ice hockey finalists in the history of the Sullivan, and none have ever captured the award.

Augustine joins Boise State football standout Ashton Jeanty, Duke freshman Cooper Flagg, figure skater Ilia Malinin, and Nebraska volleyball player Lexi Rodriguez.

In addition to the AAU Sullivan Award, Augustine is also a semifinalist for the Mike Richter Award as the nation’s top goaltender in Division I, and the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year Award.

Augustine is one of just 32 full-time starting goaltenders in the nation (75% of his team minutes or more). He has played in 27 of MSU’s 34 games, missing four while at the World Junior Championships where he backstopped Team USA to a second straight gold (the first US entry to ever accomplish that feat) and a third straight medal at that tournament overall. Among the full-time starting goaltenders in the country, Augustine owns the second-fewest losses (6), and among that group ranks eighth in GAA, fifth in save percentage, and has allowed 57 goals, the third fewest among full-time starters. He also averages 0.63 wins per start, fourth among full-time netminders.

Augustine is the youngest full-time starting goaltender in Division I for the second consecutive season. Despite missing four games for the IIHF U-20 World Junior Tournament in late December/early January, Augustine leads the Big Ten in wins (17, 10th NCAA), save percentage (.925, 13th NCAA) and goals against average (2.09, 16th NCAA), and is third in games played (27), minutes played (1635:30), and fourth in saves (705).

Only one of Augustine’s six losses this season is to a team outside of the top 15 of the current Pairwise rankings (as of March 10).  Five of his six losses are to teams ranked in both top 20 polls. He is one of two Richter finalists to lose just one game to a team outside of the top 15 of PairWise – all others have lost at least two.

Augustine’s current season statistics would be the best for an MSU goaltender over the last 20 seasons. Augustine’s .925 save percentage is the highest since Jake Hildebrand’s .930 in 2014-15, the year he was the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year. His 2.09 is the lowest goals against average since Jeff Lerg posted a 1.94 in his freshman season, (2005-06).

Augustine’s impressive numbers between the pipes have come against some of the most lethal scorers in the country. The goalie has faced 12 of the nation’s point-per-game scorers in a combined 17 games this season (of Augustine’s 27 played) and has allowed 13 goals (and 28 points) to those players. In fact, two-thirds (17 of 27) of Augustine’s starts this season have come against offenses that average 3.0 goals per game or better. In those 17 games, Augustine has a .920 save percentage and 2.32 GAA. Four of those squads hail from the Big Ten, accounting for 15 of those contests.

Internationally, he is one of 19 goaltenders all-time (across all nations) to make three WJC squads in their career, an IIHF record for the position. He became Team USA’s winningest goaltender at this event with his 11th and 12th all-time victories, moving past Jack Campbell’s 10 (2010-12).

At the 2025 WJC, Augustine compiled a .917 save percentage and 2.52 goals against average, appearing in five of Team USA’s seven games. In fact, his participation in WJC gave him (literally) no holiday break; he reported to Team USA camp the day after MSU completed its series at Minnesota on Dec. 14, and returned to MSU practice 36 hours after winning a gold medal in Ottawa on Jan. 5.

The MSU sophomore is a five-time medalist at youth international events. Augustine won back-to-back U20 gold medals in 2024 and 2025 and also a bronze in 2023. Augustine won a silver (2022) and gold (2023) at the U18 World Championships. Last spring, he made his first men’s Team USA senior World Championship squad, playing four games with a roster primarily made up of NHL players.
